JetBrains has recently announced the general availability of JetGroovy 1.5, a Groovy development plug-in for IntelliJ IDEA 7. Already among the most popular and sophisticated Java IDEs, IntelliJ has steadily been adding other language support as well, such as Ruby and Flex. With the JetGroovy plug-in, IntelliJ is now also a feature-rich Groovy IDE:

IntelliJ IDEA 7 is an intelligent Groovy IDE [that] enables productive Groovy programming...

[Its features include] Groovy code editor with advanced coding assistance, smart completion, code quality maintenance with intelligent code inspections, quick-fixes, refactorings and more, plus Groovy on Grails support with dedicated visual application ER diagram, complete Groovy Server Pages support, including full coding assistance for inline Groovy code and markup, all tied together to create an excellent Groovy and Grails development environment...

The latest version of the JetGroovy plug-in include:

  • Multiple new Groovy-aware refactorings
  • Extended Groovy coding assistance with support for dynamic properties and methods
  • Groovy-ready debugger that handles mixed Java and Groovy code
  • Smart GroovyDoc browser
  • Support for automatic testing with JUnit/TestNG
  • Improved Grails coding assistance with support for JavaScript and custom tags
  • Complete support for Grails plugins

The JetGroovy plug-in supports all of IntelliJ IDEA 7.0 releases, including 7.0.2 and 7.0.3, and can be downloaded via the IntelliJ plug-in manager. Starting from version 8.0 of IntelliJ IDEA, Groovy/Grails support is going to be part of the standard distribution package instead of being provided through a plug-in.

What do you think of IntelliJ's Groovy support?

It's the best of all the IDEs right now. Of course, it's not as good as the Java support in IDEA.

By the way, what is different from this release vs. the one that was released last week? Looks like the same upgrade from looking at the features list.
