Java program icons Posted: Mar 23, 2005 2:12 PM

I have a small Java application that is used for document scanning. It includes 3-4 program icons that will change default directories for the scanned images or pop a scan driver. The application has been installed and used constantly on 1/2 dozen or so PCs, a mix on 2000 and XP. But on the two most recent installs (XP) the program icons do not display. Instead there is a black space where the icons should be located on the screen. The icon labels still appear. The program still works properly, you just need to click on the space where the icon formerly displayed. The icon directory and images are intact.

My guess is that this is an XP rights problem but not one I've been able to settle. Any ideas?

No, I think this is a graphical bug of some type.

The icon object in Java would be null, not a black box, if you would not be able to read the icon by any reason.

What Java Version do you use?

And what file type have your icons?

Thank you very much for the response.

The application uses Java Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06. It also uses Java advanced imaging 1.1.2 for JRE.

The icons are .gif.

We looked at an XP machine where the icons display correctly and copied the "scanning" directory, the one that holds all the executables as well as the icons, to one of the PCs with the icon problem. The result was unchanged.

I thought that exercise would confirm if the problem was in the application or at a layer below the application. I really can't tell what changed. JO

Yeah, sometimes it really sucks, if you just don't know where to look.

Do you also have problems if you read the gifs without the Advanced Imaging package?

It could even be the damn graphics card driver.

I removed the Advanced Imaging component and same result. I just installed the application on a new Dell D600 notebook running XP and once again have the icon display problem. I would really hope this is not a hardware issue but it's possible, I suppose. Any other ideas? Thanks again, JO

I installed a commercial scanning program "Quickscan" because it uses the same ISIS driver. It did not have the icon display problem. I think Quickscan is written in C.
