how do disable the functionality of more than one key at a time

Do you mean for a KeyAdapters for components?

Google "Java KeyEvent Tutorial", Components that
have for instance default KeyAdapters such as
KeyEvent.VK_SPACE for spacebar associated with
a Checkbox can be overrident accordingly via a
KeyAdapter (you will find all this info. via the
famous Google).

I'm not sure if that's what you were looking for
you were not too clear on that.
