You don't actually have to throw and catch the exception to get the trace, you need only create the exception to use it:

Exception e = new Exception("DEBUG");
and then use e.getStackTrace()[1]...

or as I like to do when debugging:

StackTraceElement el = new Exception("DEBUG").getStackTrace()[1];
System.out.println("Called by " + el.getClassName() + "." + el.getMethodName());
