interchange 3d Data

Hi
One of my next projects will be to evaluate a 3D-Modell given by another software.
Since I'm quiete new to the matter, I was wondering which is the adequate file format to interchange the geometry data.
I plan to use the 3D Studio standard (.3ds)
I don't need texture informations or round objects, it's just a collection of triangles provided by a 3d scanner software.
Can anyone suggest a better format or does 3ds do the job?
Since this is a commercial project I can't useopen source import moduls, I must be able to actually buy them.
