Go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

In the second section (with the heading "Download J2SE v 1.4.2_02" -- not the first section with the heading "Download NetBeans IDE v 3.5.1 with J2SE v 1.4.2 COBUNDLE"), click on the second link on the right. That is, select Windows Offline Installation of the SDK.

Next, go through the "First Cup of Java" tutorial:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/win32.html

I apologize for assuming that you're using Windows.
