Hi, I'm new to this forum. I have a simple question which I suspect requires an involved answer. My question is: I want to become a java developper, this is my goal; what should I learn to achieve this goal? Is there a seasoned developper out there who can answer this question without being too technical for a novice such as myself? Thanks!

Do you have previous development experience? Are you interested in a specific type of Java development (e.g. web, desktop?)

Hi! Thanks for replying!
No! I have no previous java developping experience. I do have a BSCS. I have done some programming but only for school assignments and projects. I have never programmed in java though. Most of my programming skills were in either in c or c++. So, I am not unfamilliar with Object Oriented Programming. However, I am not knowledgeable about java at all. I just know that it is an internet programming language and that there are several versions of it which is confusing. I know also that java programmers make lots of money and especially java developpers. I am trying to find out what are all these versions of java and what are they all used for? What is the quickest path to becoming a develpper and without wasting a lot of money and time on bogus books that don't teach anything or weekend certifications that empty your pocket book and leave your head in a post hurricane state. Thank for your contributions.

If you have been to school, try downloading something like Netbeans and a JDK and then redo some of your homework assignments to see if you like it.

A good book? Just Java was a good book when I read it, and it has been updated. There is lots of material on the internet.

Good luck.
