Can you give a little more detail about the project, like:

- How big should it be, or how much time do you have to work on it?
- Are you doing it alone, or with others?
- What are your interests? eg. graphics, algorithms, design, networking, handhelds (as in J2ME suggested above), grid computing, Jini, games, etc.
- Does it need to be done exclusively in Java?
