This article from linux devices about the Asian market, indicates the main reason for large deployment growth for J2ME on SmartPhones. The main reason is due to the amount of SmartPhone OS products on the market.

Currently we have, Linux, SymbianOS, Microsoft, PalmOS, and etc. Each OS has it sown UI API and etc whereas with J2ME you only have one major UI api for that segment of the market.

In the Asian market case, Linux is being chosen as the base SmartPhone OS because its royalty free as opposed to SymbianOS and the others.
