So, you're a J2EE server-side developer who's heard all about the buzz surrounding J2ME, and now you figure, "Why the heck don't I learn somethin' 'bout them MIDPs and CLDCs and such."
So you mosey on over to The Lurker's Guide to J2ME and view the How to Start section. Hey, there's even a link to some information on How to Market your applications, where articles talk about revenue models, and service providers, and all the other marketing mumbo-jumbo that make developers' eyes glaze over.
Now, this REALLY makes you confused. The focus seems to be on games, which makes you instantly think "Holy mother of....I'm no Playstation jock!"
Well, here's a clue from me to you. Mama always said to stick to your core competency unless something really unusual comes up. That means, translated from the Mamaish, that if your strength is in enterprise development, then you had better stick to enterprise development if at all possible and profitable. Don't try to become a game developer just because the BUZZ seems to be currently in that area.
There's help too. Developing J2ME (MIDP and others) apps for the enterprise is a rapidly growing field of endeavor that is usually avoided by the basic J2ME tutorial. But there are more and more books coming out that deal specifically with enterprise development, including Juntao's upcoming Enterprise J2ME.
So, go ahead and start learning J2ME - but do so without radically changing your outlook on life!
