The cross-platform nature of Java may be of some use after all.
IBM is experimenting with a Java-based client software that will enable people to socialize better. The software, called Socializer, utilizes an Open Service Gateway initiative (OSGi) interface and either a wireless or wired connection, allowing those sharing the application to chat or send files. Users can create profiles and exchange personal information based on pre-defined interests, according to IBM. Socializer also enables creation of user lists similar to an Instant Messaging buddy list.
Because of its cross-platform capabilities, the Java software will run on Palm, Linux, and Pocket PC handhelds, in addition to Windows laptops. This is perfect for tech geeks in a diverse world...you just never know whether that next significant other is just a short broadcast away.
Someone should probably do this using MIDP to reach a broader audience....if I know IBM, they'll have no idea how to actually market this Socializer effectively to consumers (as opposed to business users).
