This weekend I downloaded and tried out FreeBSD 5 OS using the livecd, which I downloaded from http://www.freesbie.org/. By the first impression of this, it looks awesome. The entire OS with full GUI booted directly from the cdrom. Also all the partitions (fat32, ntfs) gets mounted. Also it has a very good h/w detection.
I was able to go online in about 5min. It also can save the current os settings to an existing partition or a floppy.
If you have an old system or just want to try out FreeBSD this looks to
be the easy way out. It also comes with a lot of pre-installed utility
like FireFox, OpenOffice and GAIM.
The only sad part is that no binary
distribution jvm is available for BSD yet .
Hope SUN will help those
FreeBSD java team to get certified soon.
