There has been alot of talk of AJAX on mobile after the release of Opera Mobile SDK. Of course Mobile Opera browser implements AJAX on mobile by running Opera as a MIDlet using js in binary form of java classes to beat MSIE Mobile on speed tests.
I may somewhat involved on both AJAX on mobile and J2ME. The company is a startup and I have the final interview on Saturday. Personally, I think there is room for both AJAX on mobile and J2ME within the same Mobile Ecosystem.
