Frank Kievet has a nice detailed explanation of why special class loading triggers PermGen Space memory errors He than modifies an Java6 JDK utility jhat to track down the memory leak in the classloader as detailed in this post.

Because both Application servers and IDEs might use special classloaders to not only delpoy new applications but also to launch applications you can see why PermGen Space in JDK 6 was increased to 96 Megabytes.
