Now the press is trotting out all the name sayers. Before you give those name sayers more attention than they deserve consider these points:

1. There have been the same concerns with GPLv2 before not just covering java but also found in fonts and etc.

2. While FSF's legal team has been very helpful in fully explaining the GPLv2 in these terms there was no specificity of language in GPLv2 like there is in GPLv3.

3. Despite Sun's claim of the Novell/Microsoft move influencing the decision the decision was made at least 8 months ago as Sun admits spending 6 months of lawyers and developers time in preparing for this GPL move.

Some avenues to alleviate your concerns would be the FAQ pages at FSF.org that cover java/VM issues and also the GNU Classpath pages.
