Russell Beattie is no longer blogging so maybe I should take this thought up. Hopefully, my story telling and writing skills will get the point across although I am not as skilled as Russel Beattie.
A major portion of revenue for Mobile Carriers/Operators is generated by data services. It is the social interaction within the business workplace and or personal space that drives those data services.
How can one understand the impact of Mobile Carrier/Operator policy on 3rd party applications network access to data services and etc if corporate employees and management are not using the data services like their customers?
Can you imagine the owner of your favorite pizzeria never ever eating his or her own pizza? Can you imagine how that might ties one hands as far as getting pizza sales?
Blogging is bu tone social interaction that impacts usage of mobile data services. It could also be using LBS products and etc. My point being that the added barriers and walls to the outside developer and innovator to create a product that drives mobile data services usage through the roof is nto a good deal for any Mobile Carrier in the long term.
Now, to be fair towards all Mobile Carriers the main reason why most carriers have pay to play partnership programs for network/data access for 3rd party services is that it removes the unknown per revenue projections. Might I suggest a slight change?
Introductory partnership fees. Fee gets decreased to zero for every year past first one if a data usage projection is reached. It still gives a revenue projection for that first year and you have the data on how data services usage increased to project revenue for other years.
This is not to say that the Mobile carriers have not made strides in making it easier to develop services that use Mobile data Services from the technical stand point. However, the high cost of data/network access not from the data plan price but from integrating mobile clients for mobile carrier specific access rules means that less innovator will attempt to develop a mobile service that drives mobile carrier data usage through the roof.
Blogging is the idea example of using a 3rd party non partner with mobile carrier application/service that can indicate to mobile carrier management where their policies might need to change to encourage innovation from the outside to drive theri data services plans usage.
But than again maybe I am wrong? Mobile carriers, engage develeopers in a conversation. We do not bite.. well at least not at first :)
