Somewhere on the net i read that Dell’s 5510 UMTS Express card is based on Novatel Merlin XU-870. Since i am aware of Mac drivers for the Novatel card, i thought its no problem to buy Dells variant and install the Novatel drivers.
I wasnt surprised to see that Dell only ships Windows drivers, but i was really surprised to see that the Novatel Mac drivers didnt work either. So it seems that Dell changed the firmware slightly so that the Novatel driver doesnt recognize the card.
We will see if Dell will return the card because its really a shame that they change something to that Mac users are the idiots in the game. If they wont return it, i will definitely never buy at dell again and since i am business customer, perhaps they will think twice.
Now i will try to get the real Novatel XU-870, or at least a vodafone branded one. I hate such time wasting issues. Will update this thread in the comments to let people know how Dell performed on this “issue”!
Update: It seems Dell has no problems in taking it back. So i was not that stupid to buy at Dell.
