Sometimes i dont know what the hell companies are doing. In the case of of common controls (a product by SCC Informationssysteme GmbH)  you can see how mismanagement can lead to a bitter state of a product which definitely has a community but no future at the moment. Common Controls is a JSP taglib + add on framework for Struts 1. It extended the base Action class and added support for additional events for the CC widgets.

For ages there has been no new release and the people behind common controls are not actively supporting the forum anymore. I emailed directly their support emailaddress w/o success either. So it seems they have lost interest into the product. Of course its doomed without further development, because Struts 1.x is dead and wont have a future. Upgrading to Struts 2.x wouldnt be too hard, so i wonder why they dont tackle this. But if they have really given up on the project, why not open source it? There is a community behind this product and i am quite sure that it would survive when its driven by the community.

If the people at SCC Informationssysteme GmbH would be smart enough, they could chose a license so that they still can make profit from services or add-on features or whatever. But right now, i cant see how they want to get one single more customer. Since they dont license on yearly basis, there cant be too much income at all for this kind of business area. Its really sad to see wrong management decissions over and over again. And if they fail in such a great way, they could at least make an end-of-product announcement. As owner of the said company, i would think twice if i want to trash my reputation by just doing nothing about all this.
