Red, black, and yellow wasp on clover flower

Eastern Cicada Killer, Sphecius speciosus
Ridgewood Reservoir, 2007-07-14

These large wasps are very impressive looking, but they almost never sting humans. They’re pretty common on lawns and fields around New York City right now, and will be for the next month or so.

Other insect species seen today at Ridgewood Reservoir includedL

  • Blue Dasher
  • Comet Darner
  • Familiar Bluet
  • Summer Azure
  • Monarch
  • Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
  • Black Swallowtail
  • American Lady
  • Cabbage White
  • Clouded Sulphur
  • Orange Sulphur
  • Long-legged Fly
  • Carolina Grasshopper

I’m still going through the photos. It was a good day for bugs. :-)
