Today we got a nice new workgroup server we want to use for development and testing purposes. For that we are planning to install vmware server on it so that we can create several virtual machines for diverse things. So far so good. In the last days i was thinking about what base operating system i wanna use on it. I am not a friend of microsoft or apple stuff on a server machine, so it was clear that it must be a linux. But i had a hard time deciding what distro i wanna use. So far my experience with linux was only with Suse and Red Hat but since a few months/years, i really hate rpm as package manager and always liked the way Debian is handling this with apt.
So yesterday the distro list i have in my mind decreased to two entries. Debian and Ubuntu. After googling a while for the pros and cons of both distributions, i settled for Debian. The goals of the Debian project are definitely more in the spirit of open source and i have the feeling that Ubuntu is great for linux beginners but Debian is the more flexible distribution. The community behind looks great and Debian is existing even without the millions Ubuntu is receiving. What happens when Mark Shuttleworth stops supporting Ubuntu?
So this weekend i will start getting myself comfortable with Debian. What a nice coincidence that the german linux magazine has just put out a special issue focusing on Debian 4.0R1 including a DVD with the latest distribution and of course articles around Etch. Thats the fun part working in or owning a small company. You come in contact with a lot of things. Of course not everybody likes that but i for myself am always interessted in learning new things, no matter if its java or linux related.
