This is one of the geometers. It’s medium sized as moths go, maybe 1.5 centimeters from wingtip to wingtip. It was easily spotted on the outside of the restroom building when I arrived about 7:30 AM this morning.
There are maybe 10,000 species of moths in the United States. Not all of them have common names. This one from San Joaquin Wildlife refuge this morning has been tentatively ID’d as Digrammia irrorata, #6395 in the Hodges catalog. (Ronald W. Hodges, Check List of the Lepidoptera of America North of Mexico, 1983).
