For those who do not read the blog comments, Andrei Loskutov sent me link to the Bug report for the Classic Updater choice in Eclipse 3.4 capabilities preferences not sticking. It appears to be being solved at the moment to have the Classic Updater choice stored across sessions.

One of the concerns they are working on besides the having the choice stored across session is the confusion that two update choices in the help menu presents. One suggestion has been to have the Equinox P2 Updater as a Capabilities Preference choice to help alleviate the two update choices on help menu confusion.

Thus, although user reports of rough spots on using Eclipse Equinox P2 might still being reported the bugs are being solved.
