Recently the release notes of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 mentioned the deprecation of the Apple-supplied Java runtime leading to fears for the future of Java on the Mac. With the news by Oracle and Apple of the OpenJDK project for Mac OS X those fears have disappeared. Hasan Rizvi, Oracle's senior vice president of Development stated,
"The Java developer community can rest assured that the leading edge Java environment will continue to be available on Mac OS X in the future".
The project will start on a Java SE 7 implementation for the Mac OS X with Apple providing most of the core components. The release will be available from Oracle as with all future releases for the Mac OS X. It's also been confirmed by Apple that "Java SE 6 will continue to be available from Apple for Mac OS X Snow Leopard® and the upcoming release of Mac OS X Lion".
