Tuesday it’s another early morning to drive about an hour and half away to the Pacific Coast for some lowland birds. First stop was a rice farm that attracted a lot of herons and shorebirds.
Crested Bobwhite
Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture
Scaly-breasted Hummingbird
Straight-billed Woodcreeper
Roadside Hawk
Pale-eyed Pygmy-Tyrant
Veraguan Mango (a Panamanian endemic)
Second stop was Raul Arias de Para’s (owner of the canopy Tower and Lodge) beach house, which had lots of Magnificent Frigatebirds, and our first sanderlings of the trip, but no lifers. After lunch at the beach house, we visited some fiedls around the small town of El Chirru and added 4 more:
Groove-billed Ani
Brown-throated Parakeet
Aplomado Falcon
Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (very cute)
Great birds all, but it’s going to be tough to find 22 new species tomorrow to make 800, especially since it’s a short day before we drive back to Panama City.
