Speaking of TCB my mother asked me to help her out with some family bid'ness tomorrow for a few hours, going to probate court with her to go over the annual accounting for my grandmother's estate. You know, stuff like, "what's up with this $32 to have film developed?"
Anyway, I'm going to have to gussy myself up a little bit, maybe even wear my sports-jacket that I'm always looking for an excuse to wear. Then I got to thinking, everyone at work is going to think I'm going to interview somewhere (you know, because I'm dressed up).
That made me think, "since I currently have a job, if I was going to interview for another one, I wouldn't be trying to get a job where I had to dress up for an interview." Not dressing up for interviews is one of those interview taboos that, in my trade at least (programming), makes no sense at all: one's ability to code, and even manage coders, has nothing to do with how you're dressed. Even more to the point, once you get the job, you never dress up again.
Of course, we all know you have to impress the non-coders, and there's even those people who actually believe the train of thought that goes, "well, they're interviewing, and if they don't dress up, it shows they don't care, so, come on!, just dress up."
Well, I call bull-shit on the whole having to dress up for programming jobs. Hell, for pretty much every non-customer facing job. Blame it on being an Austin native, but having to dress up is on my grit-gettin' short list.
Just 'cause it's bull-shit, though, doesn't mean it probably shouldn't be done...cause them people doin' the hiring don't agree. It's times like those, baby, that you just gotta lump it, put on the Dockers, tuck in the shirt, and do a little TCB.
