RICK: How can you close me up? On what grounds?
RENAULT: I am shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! The croupier comes out of the gambling room and up to Renault.
CROUPIER: (handing Renault a roll of bills) Your winnings, sir.
RENAULT: Oh. Thank you very much. (turns to the crowd again) Everybody out at once!
I've noticed reference to that bit a couple times this week. First, in use by an interviewee on NPR in reference something in the world of politics and business, and second, by
Steve Gillmor in a post about low adoption rate of RSS readers intra-Microsoft being 15%, and that actually being higher than expected.
Personally, since I heard it on the radio a few days ago, I've been thinking it'd make a good epigraph for a book on how to actually improve processes (as opposed to a book on just what the improved process would be) in software companies. I think everyone who's actually paying attention at a software company has Renault's same ironic moment daily, if not hourly.
(Now, I don't know what'd actually be in that book...)
