I now have an ADSL connection, roughly 28 months after I thought I would have. Well, it's more like 33 months later, as that's the length if time I've been back in Ireland, and there was a lot of talk of broadband being available on October of 2001 when I moved (laugh if you want, I didn't find it funny). But it would have been 28 Months Later if I hadn't move house in the new year and cancelled. Honest. I downloaded Eclipse 30M8, which is about 85Mbs, in 25 minutes. Good. Eircom supply you with a one-port Netopia Cayman router and dhcp server (which does a bunch of other stuff if you look past the quickguide). Formerly I dialed up using an SMC Barricade 4-port plus print server (an excellent product). I haven't figured out how to get the Cayman and the Barricade to play nice yet - I think I'd like to split out natting/dhcp and routing; certainly I'll want a DMZ at some point. My laptops are currently connected via wireless by hanging an SMC WAP off the Cayman's port, but that means the servers are off the LAN. Presumably I can connect the Cayman into the SMC WAN port, and do some jiggery pokery with routes/ppoe/dhcp. But no luck so far. There's not much info to be found online. If anyone knows how to hook these together, pointers much appreciated. Maybe it's time to go full wifi....
