Seeing some of Tim Bray's recent posts on Japan and watching Lost in Translation has made me wistful about time spent in Japan, albeit primarily on business. Deciphering place names on the subway, sushi breakfast at the Tsukiji, mechanized taxicab doors, embarrassingly polite and helpful hotel staff,...It's nice to be subtly challenged by everyday things that are both vaguely familiar and completely alien at the same time.
