Never thought it would happen, but a co-worker nagged and nagged me to stop using vi/vim and give Eclipse a shot. A few days later I was hooked. The on-the-fly/as-you-type compile errors and the tool's full understanding of java code relationships make me more productive even though I have to use the mouse! Eclipse is greatly enhanced by the wide variety of plugins available. Below is a list of plugins that are essential to me these days:

• checkclipse - checkstyle within eclipse
• easyexplore - pop Windows explorer from within eclipse tree
• ESSTP - Visual Source Safe from within eclipse
• foghorn - never miss an error
• call hierarchy - walk the call tree
• jalopy - formatting done right
• pmd - catch mistakes before you test
• jadclipse - hook jad directly into eclipse to view source on any class
• veloedit - velocity support within eclipse
