The BPEL news of the day is that ActiveEndpoints has released a basic BPEL engine into GPL'd open source through ActiveBPEL.org. What does this mean, in the big picture? From the perspective of an engine vendor, I can say that:
First, it means that more people will start thinking about and experimenting with BPEL, and that is an unequivocally good thing.
Second, it is a step toward the development of a healthy market for BPEL runtime engines, BPEL tooling, and BPEL analytics.
An environment where BPEL is truly leveraged as a standard benefits everyone: it enables developers to gain portable skills, customers to freely select implementations and tooling that suit their needs, and vendors to innovate on product packaging and features.
