Well not really a new competitor but a more focused one. Some major Consumer Electronics vendors and hardware vendors of PDAs have banded together in the form of CE Linux Forum to join forces in coding Linux extensions for Linux on PDAs.

As of yet J2SE and J2ME have not been submitted. Maybe Sun should get a move on this due to the industry leaers in Consumer Electronics that are invkved. Releasing the J2ME RI for ARM processor woudl help towards this goal.
