Off a recommendation I saw in the comments of a post on Robert Scoble's blog I started using Picasa for managing our digital photo collection. It seems really excellent so far. By default it has a tray application that constantly hunts your hard drives for new images. That didn't last long. Apart from that, it's really neat. Very pretty interface, though a bit too non-standard for my liking. It's a 15 day trial and $30 or so to buy, so it's not too bad. Much better than the standard software that comes with Canon digitals.

I also checked out Preclick, which is a tiny freeware program that does some of the same things. It's much leaner, but very fast. I think like Picasa better though.
