Feed Description: (Technical) the rants of a java developer trapped in the body of a java developer!
What does a man do these days to impress his loved one? Gone are the days where one could show his prowess by amazing feats of strength; carry that heavy bag or open that door. Matters get worse when your wife is as much of a super-geek as you are; you can't even dazzle her with great gadgets and keep the mystery of how they work to yourself!
Fortunately for me my wife is indeed a super-geek; she speaks java, knocks out Linux shell scripts, optimizes databases and is glued to her blackbery. She is not your typical 'Girlie in IT' stereotype by any stretch of the imagination; this woman rocks!
So impressing her takes a significant amount of effort; you can't deploy the usual tricks so you have to think a little 'out of the box'. But this week I managed it.
A number of years ago I built a web-based application for bug-tracking. We called it the Ticket-System and sold a number of units. It was simple and not overtly complicated. That was its beauty; more of a knowledge based system than anything else. A place where we would dump the collective knowledge that would normally have been locked away in email or chat logs. Anyway, last weekend, after a particularly good week of training a class of bodies, I needed to get my hands dirty with something there and then so I turned my attention to doing all the wee things to the Ticket-System I always wanted to do. No commercial pressure, no deadlines, just sheer coding passion pouring out.
Aside from tidying up the CSS and layout, I crafted a whole email frontend to it to allow you to insert, updated, respond to tickets via email. Hence a certain lady could use it from her Blackberry. Halfway through the exercise I found myself coding exclusively for my wife! She has been using it this week, answering Blog-City support emails from a variety of interesting locations and she loves it! I scored a hit.
Some men lock themselves in their shed/garage and build beautiful wood creations. Some even spend time in the garden carefully crafting that new flowerbed or patio. Not I.
But the question is what to buy her for Christmas? I may have to resort to a new washing machine that sends out emails when the wash is completed; washing straight to Blackberry!
