In my continuing mobile/wireless research/education I have come across SyncML and WBXML.
Did a quick search on developerWorks that proved fruitfull with lots of good articles.
Of course there is a Java based SyncML server and framework called Sync4j.
There is also a free chapter from Wireless Java Programming with Java 2 Micro Edition on SyncML and J2ME.
