the problem this thing solves are the two things I dislike completely
about the ipod
1. no WMA or OGG (well the virgin player plays WMA at least)
2. closed-shop downloading system. can you say monopoly market? the
funny thing is if microsoft did this everyone would scream blue
murder. ironically the new wma player (v10) is much more 'open' than
itunes.
if any mac-head uses the phrase "just works" I will cut their tongue
out. it "just works" if you "just wanna do what apple tells you to
do". just 'cos its apple doesn't excuse its proprietryness anymore
than anything from microsoft or ibm or anyone else. and apple weren't
there first as I've sen asserted in the recent past - creative had a
hard disk player out a year before anyone ever even heard of the ipod.
the ipod blows chunks - it's a coolio fashion victim's toy for the
fashion conscious to flash around to show how cool they are with it.
the iriver h340 for example has features a million times better than
an ipod. IT RECORDS for a start. ohh but the apple has a 'sleek'
minimalist design and FORM trumps FUNCTION right? wrong. Ipod is
marketing and I'm well over the marketing of appearences - that's JOHN
HOWARD THINKING RIGHT THERE.
The iPod and iTunes do play WMA. No, they don't play DRMed WMA files, and you do have to convert WMA files to AAC.
On the other hand, WMP 10 won't play AAC at all (DRMed or not), and any number of credible sources on the subject of audio quality will vouch for AAC being a top notch format. Additionally, the iPod does support lossless codecs.
