The Register has an interesting, short article from Bloor about IBM's feature/branding conflict between DB2 and Informix. Anyone who's worked at a large company knows this story.

And, here's something along the same lines, except with versions of a product.

Meanwhile, other industries seem to handle this problem just fine (after several "misteps").
