I've been doing some research today into SWT and JFace. Along the way I've got a good sample of background noise. I love the way certain topics related to application development get "facts" associated with them that justified or not just stick forever. Here are a few examples:
Java is slow.
Swing is slow.
Microsoft is evil (not quite as clear cut as that).
SCO is evil (definitely evil ... axis of evil ... wait I'm beginning to sound like a SNL skit)
To estimate cost and schedule, first estimate lines of code. (wrong but project managers still use it)
Adding X developers to a project will get it done X amount sooner. (see above)
So lets take my favorite ... guess which one ... if you said #2 you are right. I've probably seen 100 flame war comments on Swing vs. SWT today. They are all quite funny. If anyone is paying attention, they will note I have not taken a position on "The Great SWT/Swing 21st Century Flame War". This is because I don't think it is as clear cut as 90% of the noise commenters want to make it out to be. Of course Swing can be slow. I can make perl slow, C slow, and even SWT slow if I try. On the other hand, people seem bring up the slow SWT Table situtation (which I think is now fixed, someone correct me if I'm wrong) as a counter argument. Both are half truths and poor arguments.
Now let me try to sum of this rant ... yes I was trying to go somewhere with this. I kept thinking to myself this whole situation reminds me of something. On the way home it hit me ... Republicans and Democrats. I've heard so many half truths and bad arguments on television. No educated person can believe the arguments either candidate. I'm the same way with the SWT and Swing threads on the internet. All I see is noise.
