Martin over at Ocasta has developed a MIDP2.0 midlet for checking GMail. It uses the GMail's atom feed to fetch the new mail information. You can find the midlet here. The interesting thing is he has trouble getting it to work on Nokia and Sony phones but it works on my Microsoft Windows Mobile powered C500 with out crashing. ;-) But it does not look like a native app. Here are some screenshots:
