Sometimes I think to myself what makes a good developer ?, is it our technical knowledge, the way we treat our peers developer or is it being a hacker and able to solve problems. What I found most of the time is the combination of all these characteristics. You can't be a good developer if you can't help your peers, why ? well, because that's the moral duty that we carry within ourself as a developer to help other developer too, isn't that what Open Source community is all about But, also you can't be a good developer if you don't have the technical knowledge or technical know-how on the technology you are working with.
When I'm working or planning to start a project the first thing I do is get to know my peers, this will make things easier so that I know what kind of characters I will be facing with in my day-to-day routine with them. As for the technical knowledge it's no biggy it's basically a piece of cake, no matter how complex a technology is you can figure it out as there is always a wa, and besides there is the internet, if you are not using now to solve your problem, then I guess you better start looking at it real hard.
Sharing knowledge and information with your peers is the most important thing that you can do for them on a project, because this will earn you respect and trust that you need. Developer are a very unique kind of human species as they don't trust people that easy (I'm like that) and they will analyse the people that they are working with before they move ahead , and at the end of the day if their analysis is correct then they will move forward otherwise they will go anywhere near you.
