From time to time i am getting these "can you help me with that" emails. Most of the time its about java of course. The topics are diverse, sometimes they are related to my blog and sometimes to my homepage or whatever. I mean, i dont have anything about being asked about anything, but it helps to know the people you ask, at least by having had some kind of conversation before. But being asked by completely unkown people for pieces of sourcecode is disgusting. Getting asked about an article you wrote is something completely different and is not part of this blog.

My latest email i got 3 days ago was from an IT student with some project task to code something in Java. To be more precise, to code something with JGoodies/Swing. She contacted me because my company page states that i am using JGoodies, so she thought that i can help her out by supplying sourcecode, links and other documentation to JGoodies.

Perhaps i am despiteful, but i dont think that you can ask someone you dont know a second for something like that. Furthermore, if you are studying IT, you really should be able to search and learn for yourself. I am definitely not the smartest guy in the world but i nevertheless managed to self teach me a lot of java APIs and all sorts of other programming stuff. It wasnt _that_ hard. Being in a college/university environment with lots of students makes it even easier to get through all this by partnering with your friends.

So all you "please help me" email authors, sit down and work for at least some hours before sending this kind of emails. And consider that the recipients of your emails are most likely working people without tons of spare time.
