The JDJ reader awards are a pain but i am taking the ballot year after year, perhaps i have a really scary mindset sometimes. But lets comment on some categories, because flaming about the whole story is the real driving force.
Best book:
IBM most likely spent a large amoung of big-blue-dollars to SysCon to have 67 books from IBM Press on that list. Like Cameron i am missing "J2EE development without EJB" which is one of the most influencal java books the last years (IMO).
Best enterprise database:
I like the "HSQLDB" nomination here. To be honest, HSQLDB is indeed a really cool database for demo and test purposes, but i dont get it how this can be listed in the enterprise section. But i voted for it anyway :-)
Best java component:
Another hot entry is the "Java Date Picker". I cant imagine of a more un-inovative component than a Swing Date Picker, despite the fact that there are about 215 Date Pickers available on the net. But perhaps this one can also guess the date you are going to enter.
Best Team Development Tool:
I am definitely missing Subversion here and i cant see Eclipse any more, this goddam thing is listed in each and every category, despite of best enterprise database and 1-2 others.
Best Java installation tool:
Three nominations for this category seems a little sparse, i am quite sure that there a are A LOT more. But perhaps only these three companies have bought some more coffee for the SysCon guys.
All in all, its really one of the ugliest votings in the WWW. But they really have nice Winner-Logos, so if i would sell a java product, i would certainly try to get listed. I am also excited to see if SysCon will send any other material, even without the permission to do so. All this information gathering at the end is really disgusting.
