Well JetBrains are not open sourcing their IDE but are providing a free license for active open source projects. Read the license agreement and apply here.

I think they are feeling the heat from Eclipse. A lot of open source projects use Eclipse IDE. The trend is to use the same IDE for work too. Maybe JetBrains are loosing their market share due to this. :-)

I used to think we were feeling the heat too, but now I think all the buzz generated by Eclipse is actually drawing a lot of attention to IDEA. We've had a 200% increase in web traffic over 3 months! I made a screencast of my analysis at http://idea-log.blogspot.com/
