Feed Description: A space to put my thoughts into writing.
A few days back, my first year blogging anniversary went by unnoticed by me. My first post was the 29th of March of 2005, so I have been blogging for one year and 12 days now.
I have not been as consistent with my posts as I would like, but at least I have enough momentum to keep going and I have learned a few things from my experiences here. This stuff may be obvious to experienced bloggers, but it took me the better part of this past year to learn:
It's really worth it. It's good for your writing skills and for finding out what some people think about what you are doing.
Even for very small audiences like mine, sometimes interesting business opportunities can come up through a blog.
Post because you care, not because you hope someone else will. You don't have to be a great authority to generate some value for someone, just share what you have. As Dave Winer writes in this post, blogging is about sharing your discoveries with others, and search engines can help your own discoveries be shared with unexpected audiences.
Don't try to be perfect, you won't be, ever. Even if you could get close to be perfect, somebody will think you or your near perfect post suck.
Learn to take criticism and react calmly and politely to flames and insults. However great you feel after you flame back, remember that your words will be part of your blog even after you calm down.
If you want to think about yourself as a blogger, you better blog consistently and sincerely.
