After a couple of years following the different Python blogs out there (go planet), I sometimes forget that most people haven't even heard about Python.
The flexibility and power of dynamic languages like Python and Ruby are something that we take for granted in the community. Sadly, we still seem to be a minority.
That's why now and then it's interesting to see how Python and other dynamic languages are perceived from the outside. Which is why I link to this article from eWeek about 10 programming languages you should learn right know.
A few things I'd like to point out about this article:
Python and Ruby are part of the list, though it could be that the author simply was hard-pressed to find 10 must-learn languages, which is a rather high number.
According to one of the articles's sources, .net is where all the work is right now, though they'll hire you even if you use Java, since they can easily train you in .net then.
Python gets the smallest blurb and is called a minimalist language with a sense of humor.
Ruby almost never gets mentioned anywhere without also bringing up Rails.
The hype about Ajax is so big that it gets a place on this list, despite "technically" not being a language (maybe because it is "so damned hard to learn").
Perl still makes the list, even though it doesn't seem to be gaining popularity anymore.
