Since 2004, the digital services team from the Library of the National Congress of Chile have embraced Plone as their CMS. In fact, the Library's main web site is Plone based.
However, not many organizations in Chile use Plone, so new developers mostly had to learn by themselves, with some help from their ever busier veteran developers, who in turn were also self-learners.
They decided that to take the most advantage from Plone, they needed to learn more about Zope and Python, which meant it was time to get some training in those areas.
Plone, Zope and Python training in Spanish is also not easy to find, at least in America, but happily for all parties concerned (that is, the library and myself), I've been doing that for the last couple of years, and somehow they found me.
It was not easy getting to Valparaiso, because being a government agency, they needed an sponsorship from the Interamerican Development Bank to get me here. Finally though, a couple of failed attempts and more than a year after our initial mail exchanges, the training course is a reality.
I'm very happy to be here and I love teaching Python, Zope and Plone to new audiences, but I really wish these technologies had more penetration in the Spanish speaking regions of Latin America (I hear Brazil is doing great, but they speak Portuguese).
Python is a great language, very easy to learn. Even the people in my non-developers course here are picking it up quite well. Zope and Plone are powerful technologies and they are ideally suited for resource starved Latin American government and educational institutions, if they only knew.
Some user groups are starting to form around here, and that surely will help, but I wonder if there's something else that can be done. I think that ZEA Partners was helpful in getting things going in Europe, where admittedly, it's a whole different ball game. Could something like this be accomplished here? Could the Plone Foundation help in any way. What do you think I can do to speed things up?
