I just threw the idea out on my day off last week when we were talking about our plans for the weekend- plan A was to go to the first Stafford car-boot sale of the season, plan B was to drive four hours each way and spend two nights by the airport in Newcastle. We chose wisely.
While I’d have love to have come to something like this anyway, going with the kids has been that much better: just through the door they were at the SciCast stand learning to take two straws and spin them around in their lips (better seen than explained). They could interact with, pick up, and touch basically everything.
Jack didn’t learn to solder at the event (though he could have), but he’s going to when we get back. We’ll probably look at some kits from Minty Geek too. Dylan picked up survival skills inside the geodesic dome (have to find north by the stars, by the sun or, if it’s over case, how to make a compass). H has taken a raft of photos of yarn-bombs for her own blog.
Without a blow-by-blow, the kids (and us) played Pong on exercise bikes, built Daleks, launched a rocket, played ping-pong with on a table that plays Daft Punk samples, programmed LEGO Mindstorms NXT kits on a giant table, competed in a Robot-Wars like competition, got chased by bins, made me a birthday card (yay) and built LED throwies.
Hopefully it’ll be on again next year. I’m unlikely to go (wow, it’s a long way), but if you’re in the area, or not adverse to very long car trips, it’s definitely recommended.
