I just got back last night from vacation. This year I went up to my parent's summer lake house in a small, unincorporated town called Lakewood, Wisconsin. There I met up with the folks, one sister and her son.
A good time was had by all. I did some fishing, a little swimming, too much drinking, lots of relaxing and saw a few sites. We even went to a small comedy show on Saturday night, which was pretty good for the most part.
Some highlights:
* I finished Pandora's Star while I was there. Excellent book, and I look forward to the conclusion.
* We don't need to go to any particular fireworks show. Over the years the "amateur" fireworks fired by some of the folks on the lake has, as the result of progressive oneupmanship, resulted in what amounts to a professional fireworks show. One can only imagine what these fools are spending, but hey, I'm not complaining.
* Tim Joyce, the comedian we saw Saturday night, was excellent, though he needed to tailor his jokes a bit more to an older audience.
* My nephew Logan, age 4, did well for the most part. Except the night he threw up everywhere. I think he drank some lake water, because he was fine the next day.
* I went fishing a few times. Mostly I caught some little bluegills. I also caught one nice sized bass. All were released for good behavior.
* I had one ghost experience - probably my grandparents. I was in the upstairs bedroom. It sounded like someone came up the stairs (which are quite creaky), then tapped on my door twice, three small taps each. Thinking it was my mom, I opened the door. No one was there. I didn't tell my parents about it, though. I figured it might upset or scare them.
* People in Wisconsin are fat. I don't think I saw anyone over 35 who was in shape. Many were obese.
