Here's an interesting (and highly theoretical) article on combining elements of static and dynamic typing: Static Typing Where Possible, Dynamic Typing When Needed: The End of the Cold War Between Programming Languages.

Personally, though, I prefer the Zen of Duck Typing - once understood, it is one of the most beautiful software constructs. And beauty is truth, right?
