For the last 10 years or so I've been looking for something to replace Master of Orion 2. There have been a few attempts, but they've all failed for one reason or another, including Master of Orion 3.

Well, this past week I've finally found a game that adds the depth and complexity I've been hoping for without getting too complex, and manages to keep a sane UI to boot. It's called Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords.

It adds a richer tech tree, minor races, more realistic diplomacy & trade, and three different ways to win a game (conquest, diplomacy or influence). There are a lot more options in terms of general tactics. There's a campaign, too, but I haven't tried it yet.

Warning: major time suck.
