I've really been enjoying Galactic Civilizations 2. This game is extremely well done. Let me highlight some of the things that are major improvements over Master of Orion 2:
* The diplomacy is actually well done. * Races don't randomly declare war on you. * Declaring war on other races generally has negative consequences in terms of relationships with other races. * Tech trading is much more sane, and diplomatic skill affects how savvy your trading is. * Trade routes aren't just abstract concepts. Your freighters can be attacked. * Much richer tech tree. You'll have to make a lot of hard choices. * Sustained military campaigns are difficult. You can win many battles and still not crush your opponent. * The Good/Evil/Neutral chrome is kinda neat. * There are four different paths to victory instead of just simple conquest.
This isn't to say that the game is perfect. First and foremost among the problems were the stability and memory issues. Fortunately, things have *much* improved with the latest patches, but it still crashes once in a long while (say, several hours). Second, the default ships suck, and having to manually design new ships gets tiresome. I'd like the game to auto-design some ships for me based on my latest and greatest tech. Third, there are a couple UI issues that are annoying, mostly regarding auto-focus on ships.
That being said, I still think this the best "Conquer the Galaxy" game I have ever played.
